365great challenge day 139: fuzzyOne of my all-time favorite textures has got to be fuzzy. Fuzzy usually means soft as well, and it’s such a fun thing to stroke, whether the fur on an animal’s back or these super comfy shorts that I got! It ranges from short little fuzzy bits like this or really long shaggy bits like on some rugs or teddy bears. The softness and warmness make it so cozy to snuggle with (and partly why Snuggies are such a fun invention!). What child doesn’t enjoy getting a nice fuzzy stuffed animal to hug and sleep with? I know I certainly did; I had a bear that was the very first gift I ever got upon arriving in the US and I was nearly inseparable from it for years, even bringing it with me to trips to China. Since then I’ve had various pillows and other stuffed animals, all of which I love to touch. It feels so great!

365great challenge day 118: first classWhen I was a kid, traveling by myself to China once, I was allowed to go sit in first class for a bit. The seats were huge and it was quieter, but I didn’t notice much difference. Over a decade later, I got my first chance to sit in first class when Panda got an upgrade (he’s got a lot of miles under his belt so they upgrade him whenever there’s an open seat) on our trip to Hawaii. We had booked the tickets separately because he was flying from the east coast in before I joined him on the second leg of the trip. So, when he got the upgrade, he gave it to me. 😀 I had no clue that they serve meals on the flight, give you alcohol for free (wasted on a teetotaler like me), and provide all around better service. I mean, I knew the service was better and there were perks, but I never really gave it much thought. As you can see though, I was pretty excited about my flight. I ate a delicious meal, had a fantastic dessert (whaaat they have ice cream sundaes?!), and got tons of space. It’s so much better flying this way! Great in many ways.

And on a side note – have you been following the Asiana flight story? Absolute insanity. I am glad that it wasn’t worse, but I feel for the parents who lost their daughters. Hopefully there are no more fatalities, though I believe there are some paralyzed? My thoughts are with them all.

365great Day 113: road trips

365great challenge day 113: road tripsIt’s such a fun, exhilarating, even romantic concept, isn’t it? Road tripping is super popular with Americans, if only as a fantasy, but plenty do manage to do at least some small ones. Whether you’re driving 3 hours or 3 days, it can be quite the experience to pack up, hop in the car, and hit the open road. Panda and I made a little one for the 4th of July break, trekking up to Pennsylvania to check out Hershey and Gettysburg, with a stop in Harrisburg. It was fun to be alone in the car together, with plenty of time for conversation, sightseeing, and overall bonding. It reminded me of trips I took with my parents as a kid – I’d spend a lot of time reading or looking at the landscape passing by as my parents sang Chinese songs playing on the cassette. We’d make pit stops for gas and food and I’d snuggle in with a blanket and pillow. What fond memories! Road trips are great for that.

365great Day 102: Legos

365great challenge day 102: legosOne of the greatest toys of my childhood (and I’m sure many others) was Legos. They are at their core such a basic concept, yet with that simplicity comes great complexity. You take a few blocks of varying sizes and colors and combine them in countless ways. Before you know it, amazing things are being imagined and built, like this magic carpet. I love how the constraints of rectangular pieces allows for some pretty amazing creativity to flourish. I’m a fan of the classic Lego set, with just the standard pieces, but the kits that they’ve created in the years since I last played with them are quite inspiring in themselves. Still, what I find to be most valuable with Legos is the ability to imagine endless possibilities. For a simple toy, that’s pretty great!

Cleaning regimen

How often do you clean?

I grew up not having chores; my parents were far more concerned about my academic and personal development. So, I got to enjoy a lot of time in my room doing my own thing. I didn’t make my bed (never saw the need) or dust or whatever other chores you might need to do to keep your room spotless. I did help out with general household chores ranging from mowing the lawn to washing dishes, but my room kind of remained my sanctuary. I rarely had to do chores within the room itself.

I now have the habit of cleaning only when I see a need – such as water marks speckling the mirror or visible dust on my shelves. I wash the dishes when they’ve filled up the sink and I do laundry when I’m running out of clothes. I don’t do preventative care or have any sort of set schedule or pattern. Meanwhile, Panda is almost the complete opposite. He regularly cleans when things are still “clean” (by my standards at least) and immediately washes dishes after eating. He does laundry at least once a week regardless of how much has accumulated and vacuums frequently too.

Last time I cleaned it was so notable I took a video. 😛

It’s really interesting how different our habits are. I enjoy a slightly messy room because it feels lived in. When things are too neat, it feels unnatural. I’d rather focus my time and efforts on living in my space; he’s willing focus his time and efforts on keeping the space neat and clean. When I do get around to cleaning, it’s usually a bit of an overhaul – a spring cleaning, if you will. I like to save up for one big effort every few weeks/months so I can spend a few hours (or the whole day) working up a sweat and really changing the way things look.

Is either way better? I don’t think so; to me, it’s a matter of preference. If cleaning all the time keeps your home in a state that makes you happy and peaceful, that’s probably what you should do. But if cleaning all the time brings on the stress of constantly thinking about it and worrying about all the chores left to do, then what’s the harm in cleaning less frequently? People have developed such an aversion to germs and things that are “dirty” but if society gets too hygienic, there are plenty of health issues to contend with. So why waste all that effort trying to avoid dust and germs only to get sick anyway? I think we could be a bit less uptight about the whole cleaning thing.

If money was no object

At the Gogobot 500 Days of Summer event, I was chatting with a friend (who also happens to be my great great greatx8 grand lil bro – yeah, random) when she asked me what I would do if I didn’t have to make money. This was in the context of what job/career you’d go for if you could do it just for fun. Of course there is plenty of non-work stuff you can do if you had all the money in the world, but that’s a discussion for another time!

My answer? I’d run a cat shelter. A no-kill one, of course (except maybe in the case of a really sick feline).

small cat climbing cage doorYeah, that was not what she was expecting! She was thinking more along the lines of a singer or something… but I stand by my choice! If I didn’t have to worry about money I would focus my energy on creating a safe environment for a ton of cats. I’d try to adopt them out to good families as much as possible, but I would keep them their entire lives if they never got a chance to leave. I’d keep them in a large house with just a few cages for special purposes, but generally they’d be free to roam through the rooms as they pleased. This would help them socialize with each other and get used to moving around a home with people coming in and out too. I’d want to have space for people to stay overnight too, whether it was staffers or prospective pet parents (though that could get complicated). After all, the best way for people to find the cat they want is to see them in as similar a habitat as they’d have once they take them home.

I guess my goals have always been a bit different. When I was a kid, I didn’t dream of being famous or being some high-powered attorney/judge/doctor/CEO. No, one of the jobs I really liked was being a school bus driver. Why? So I could give treats to the kids and brighten their day. That might have worked back in the day, but nowadays I don’t think it would fly. I mean, would you let your kid take candy from the bus driver? Maybe not. I wanted to be an elementary school teacher for similar reasons. I will always remember Mrs. Stewie, who had a magical drawer of candy that she’d open up once a month and let us “buy” candy from. We got money stamped onto homework and tests that we did well on, which we collected to use for “purchasing” treats from her.

If you could have any job in the world, without worrying about income, what would you want to do?

365great Day 43: books

365great challenge day 43: booksSo since I haven’t had internet access since yesterday morning, I’ve spent much of the past two days engulfed in some books I borrowed from the library. It was a nice break from all the technology-driven things I usually do and I was reminded of my childhood, which I spent buried in books. My tastes started off with fictional stories full of wonderful characters and unbelievable scenarios. As I grew older, I took a break from reading and have since leaned towards non-fiction that I can learn from and apply towards my life. Whatever your preferences may be, there are a vast number of books available for just about any subject your heart desires. What a great way to share and spread information or anecdotes or memories.

Siddhartha

Did you ever read about Siddhartha? I remember it was on our reading list sometime in middle school or high school and I thought it was a decent read. The story of the prince who gave up riches to reach nirvana and enlightenment was played out in this play at the Lingshan Auditorium where the giant statue of an adult Sidd overlooks the equally impressive Taihu Lake. The spot was carefully chosen for good feng shui and it’s a nice place to spend the day visiting! This auditorium is the same one where the roof is composed of an optical illusion.

My context

How do you remember things in your life?  I’ve always found it to be a roundabout process to recall what year something happened.  First I think what I was doing at that time and tie it back to a location – walking to the bus stop while reading (St. Louis, MO), riding my bike into town (Brewster, NY), or playing in a beautifully large backyard (Topeka, KS)?  Once I pinpoint the location, I am able to identify what grades I must have been in: preschool (Pennsylvania), 1st/2nd/4th (Kansas), 3rd (China), 5th-7th (Missouri), 7th-10th (New York), 11th-14th & 16th (California), or 15th (England).  I then need to think of what year it must have been based on what grade I was in.  What a mess!

Similarly, when I recall what age I was when something happened, I think of the situation based on location, tie it back to a grade level, then calculate how old I was .  I’m not sure why it’s such a lengthy process, but that’s always how I’ve drawn on memories in my life.  It makes me wonder how other people who don’t move as much do it, since much of their memories would tie back to the same location.  They seem to do it much better too!

Today someone put on 90’s music at work and one song came up that was of particular interest.  Each song that I recognized put me back to a place and time in my life when I heard that song most prominently.  Backstreet Boys took me back to the summers I spent in China with my cousins and extended family.  Destiny’s Child took me back to the fun I had biking down a huge hill by my house in New York.  TLC took me back to getting driven to swim practice at the YMCA over in Connecticut.  Tupac took me back to the lounge I studied in my first year at UCLA (yeah, I learned of him later in life).  I wouldn’t be able to place a year on when those songs came out, but I could definitely get close.  Somehow other people seem to be able to remember just what year it was though.

I’ve never understood that ability and I wonder how I will remember things if I don’t continue moving around a lot.  When everything merges into one physical space, what cues will I use to differentiate between time periods?  The way I’ve put my life into context for over two decades would become irrelevant.  I’m sure I would adapt, but at this moment I can’t fathom how.  So I wonder, how do you do it?

Silly superstitions

It didn’t even occur to me it was Friday the 13th until a guy at work said it today.  The number thirteen has actually been my favorite number since fifth grade, when we had numbered cubbyholes and I was #13.  My second favorite number is 19 because that was the box that the guy I liked had!  Haha, funny how some things really last in your life.

Well, since it was a day of superstition for much of this country, I thought I’d share a video of one of my cats.  When I was choosing them this summer, I specifically went for the dark ones because they don’t seem to get adopted as much.  I now have a gray and a black cat, both with some white accents.  I don’t know why cats get a bad rap, especially black ones, but at least they are lucky and respected in some cultures.  In this video, Missy (the gray one) was really enjoying the tag on my new Victoria’s Secret shirt.  She’s a curious and playful one!
