365great challenge day 83: blogsOops! Got a little carried away with reading blogs and I nearly forgot about today’s 365great! So, I might as well make it about blogs, right? I remember first starting off like most – writing about my life for select friends to read. I preferred using LiveJournal over Xanga and I went through a couple iterations of my blog. At some point (Jan 1, 2009 to be exact), I switched over to WordPress and have been using that ever since. I worked out well since I had been used to keeping a daily journal for most of my life (13 years) and I had only recently stopped (I blame meeting Panda and having too much fun with him). So, this new blog was a way for me to sort of continue documenting my life, albeit in a very different manner.

Personally, I love that blogging exists. I also love when I find a blogger I really like, as is the case with very few. That’s the great thing though – you can keep exploring until you find ones that really speak to you and you can interact with them! I mean, it’s no fun to follow some big namer who would never give you the light of day. I’d only do so if somehow that person offered unbelievably great stories, advice, tips, and whatnot. Plus, with bloggers, you get a sense of what other people’s lives are really like. Of course, they will filter out certain things, but there is a certain rawness to a lot of bloggers that I enjoy. I always want to know about who they are, what experiences they’ve had, and what they’re learning. The world of blogging has really opened up so much opportunity!

As a blogger myself, I appreciate that I am able to put out my own thoughts and opinions however I want. People may choose to agree or not, judge or not, read or not, but ultimately I get to decide what content is created in the first place. It’ll be a rich way to remember who I was, how I changed, and what molded me. It’s also a fabulous way for me to document experiences that I will likely forget over time. That’s why I used to obsessively journal; I just had to know what I did throughout the years! Now blogging has replaced journaling and while I miss writing on paper at times, I still think blogging is super duper great.

Sunday Social

Ok, so I was totally going to skip this week’s Sunday Social and join in for next week’s (what can I say? I don’t want to bore you with answers to questions that I don’t have interesting answers for) BUT then I saw they are doing a giveaway to participants. I can’t say no to a good giveaway and I’m particularly interested in a custom blog design. I’ve been itching for one but don’t want to spend the money. Here’s to hoping I win! 🙂

1. What is your favorite social media outlet?
Hmm, I guess I’d have to go with Facebook since it’s the most useful for me. I like the versatility of it – I can put up pictures and videos, tag friends, connect with brands, keep track of events, etc. It also happens to be the one I use the most. All others are sort of just there to help extend my blogging efforts.

2. Do you subscribe to any daily news reads? If so which ones?
No… I probably should, but there is way too much for me to read/do as it is. I usually get my news from Panda since he’s a lot better about staying up with the times. Me? I may as well live on the moon for all I know about current events.

3. Favorite magazine to have by the pool?
See that’s the thing – if I am poolside, I have a book and the title varies each time. I never have a magazine. I haven’t bought magazines since my teen years and I rarely ever read them (except for online articles).

4. Favorite summertime song?
A happy one. I’m having way too much trouble trying to think of one (sadly all the songs I can think of are melancholy). Yeah I warned you these answers would be boring.

5. Best summer concert you’ve been to?
Well, I’ve only ever been to one concert, which I was volunteering at and it was The Killers at the Hollywood Bowl. It was fun, but I didn’t know most of the songs so I wasn’t screaming and excited like most of the other people there. I also didn’t spend who knows how much to get in!

In the mail: a trade, a Kickstarter backing, a bonus gift, and more!

You know, I love mail (mostly when it’s packages, but free samples are good too) and I think there are a lot of people who love getting mail too, right? And I don’t know if you’d care to see what I’ve been receiving, but that seems like a fun way to share some of the random things that don’t make it into blog posts. I’ll skip some things I’ve already mentioned so it’s not too repetitive. Everything here arrived within the past month or so!

trade items including juice beauty lip gloss, juice beauty hydrating mist, zoya nail polish, la fresh oil-free face cleanser sample wipe, benefit the porefessional sample, and urban decay moondust eyeshadow sample with sephora baggieI got some items in my May Ipsy bag that I mentioned I wanted to trade and I was able to complete my very first successful trade recently! I sent the Pacifica perfume roller that I had not intended on trading, but since the girl wanted it and she had other things I wanted, I happily parted ways with it. The other item I sent her was the Mirabella lipstick that I knew I would get out of my hands one way or another! Lipstick is just not my thing. In exchange, I got the Juice Beauty lip gloss in Fig, Juice Beauty Hydrating Mist, and Zoya nail polish in Neely (mint greenish). She even added a few bonus samples! There was a La Fresh Oil-Free Face Cleanser wipe, a small sample of Benefit’s “the POREfessional” balm, and an Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow sample. Oh, and a cute little plastic Sephora baggie. 🙂 I’ve already got trade #2 underway with another girl! If you’re interested, maybe we can trade too.

kate funk the world's most super amazing 100% awesome cat calendar and cards from kickstarter backingI don’t quite remember how I stumbled across this Kickstarter for The World’s Most Super-Amazing 100% Awesome Cat Calendar, but I’m sure glad I did. As a major cat fan, I couldn’t help myself. The scenes and costumes created for the photo shoots are really amazing and I had to support Kate Funk as an artist and businesswoman and AC as a hard-working, ever-patient model. I mean, my cat would never sit so nicely! I chose to get the calendar and 5-card combo. I let my cousin choose a design she liked, which happened to be one I had chosen for myself so that’s why one of the designs is hidden here – it’s just a repeat. I love how much care everything was created, packaged, and sent in. This is quality stuff that I will really enjoy using!

welch's purple nalgene bottleWelch’s is offering these cute 12-oz Nalgene water bottles for free if you bought three of their Refrigerated Juice Cocktails (59 oz size in any flavor). You have to buy them between March 18-July 31 of this year and send in your receipts for the purchases to redeem. Then you just print and fill out this form and mail it in by August 30. A few weeks later, you’ll get a bottle like mine! Totally adorable, very high quality, and a great size for kids or those who want a smaller bottle to keep around. If you’re interested, hurry up before the offer ends! You’ve got less than two months now, which should be ample time to drink three cartons of juice, don’t you think?

brand new google nexus 7 in box with exterior boxWhen I decided to bundle our home internet and phone into one while adding on TV service for a total package from AT&T Uverse, they were offering a bonus product. I got to choose between a Nexus 7, an Xbox, and some other electronic product. As you can see, I opted for the Nexus 7. I figure it’d be perfect since my mom’s the only one who doesn’t have a tablet. It’ll be good for her to learn and have something portable to use on the go! I think it would be cool to use both it and my iPad, but that’s completely unnecessary. Besides, Panda has a Nexus 7 so whenever I move in with him I can just use his as I please. 😉

Have you gotten anything cool in the mail recently? Do share!

365great Day 82: optical illusions

365great challenge day 82: optical illusionsIt’s so fascinating how our eyes can trick us (or is it our minds tricking us with our eyes??). I think optical illusions are so crazy because even after you know the truth, it’s so sooo hard to see it (literally). I mean, you can know that those two lines are the same exact length, but it just doesn’t look that way unless they’re on top of each other! Same goes with this picture – it looks like the tiles get smaller and smaller (and fewer and fewer too, at first glance) – right?? Well, in fact each level actually has the same number of tiles AND each tile size is identical. They then have colored lights changing the look of the ceiling to confuse you even further. I mean, I never would have guessed it! And only when all the tiles are their normal white, staring very very hard, can I start to see how they are all the same. It’s mind-goggling and I love it! Totally great.

Julep hand care review

Last month, I received a set of Julep hand care products to test for a focus group. While I already shared my feedback in the surveys for the company, I figured I might as well share it with you too. I was sent a bag with five products, three of which were the ones I was to test and two of which were supplements to ensure all my hand care needs could be met by Julep products.

side by side collage of julep reusable bag and julep products including hand cream, glycolic hand scrub, oxygen nail treatment, cuticle serum, and nail polish remover wipes

They came with a reusable bag. I received the hand cream, oxygen nail treatment, mighty nail and cuticle cream, glycolic hand scrub, and nail polish remover pads.

julep hand care products including hand cream, glycolic hand scrub, oxygen nail treatment, and cuticle serum

Four of the items out of their boxes.

I was only testing the three items in white boxes, but let me share my thoughts on all the products.

open packet of julep one-step polish remover pad with pad peeking out of packagingOne-Step Polish Remover Pad – The very first item I tried was one of the nail polish remover pads because I had some nail polish that I needed to remove before I could start testing. It was a pretty fibrous pad that was very wet and it almost got all of my nail polish off, but the solution evaporated a bit too fast so I couldn’t quite get all ten nails. It performed better than the La Fresh travel wipe nail polish remover (which has acetone), but nowhere near as well as the La Fresh eco-beauty nail polish remover acetone-free pad (my all-time favorite nail polish remover). Would I buy these? In a pinch, maybe, but as long as I can get my acetone-free, amazing-smelling La Fresh eco-beauty wipes then I have no need for others.

comparison of la fresh nail polish remover wipes on left, la fresh eco-beauty nail polish remover acetone-free on right

The wipe on the right is my fav.

small drop of julep glycolic hand scrub in palm of handGlycolic Hand Scrub – Every morning of testing, I got up and exfoliated my hands with the glycolic scrub. It is a thick creamy texture and you only need a small dollop. The little exfoliating beads/grains are actually from apricot seeds and the product smells fabulous! The scrub was smooth and created a slippery sensation as I scrubbed my hands. I really enjoyed this product and I definitely noticed a difference in my skin immediately after use. My hands were softer and the skin felt very supple. It was fantastic! I would definitely continue buying this product and I have actually used it for my body as well, which feels wonder as well. This was my favorite of all the products.

drop of julep oxygen nail treatment on brush hovering over bottle openingOxygen Nail Treatment – Every three or four days, I was to apply the oxygen nail treatment and keep it on until the next application. It’s very similar to nail polish, except that it is less drippy. I found that because of this thicker consistency, each layer on my nail was much thicker than nail polish would have been. You brush on two layers of the treatment and your nails have a subtle pink finish – they call it “nail makeup” – and it’s nice whether you want to feel like you have nail polish on or you want it to be practically invisible. My nails definitely looked brighter and whiter after using this, but I didn’t feel like it made them stronger. In fact, a split I had in my nail got worse so it didn’t seem to help slow down damage. I might consider repurchasing if I found my nails were really yellowing, but if I needed to strengthen them I’d try something else.

julep mighty nail cuticle serum brushMighty Nail & Cuticle Serum – Once the nail treatment dried, I could brush on the cuticle serum. Now here’s where I got confused – first, what should cuticles look like? I tried searching around but got no satisfying results. I think mine look pretty healthy, so I really didn’t know what to look for in terms of improvement. I did have one of those weird bits if skin on the side of my nail that was sticking out, so I wondered if it might help that? That seemed too ambitious though. Second, the serum is supposed to help with nail ridges and strengthening them as well, but now could I do that when I already applied the oxygen nail treatment? Alas, it’s a mystery to me. I was never sure how much I should put on (so I erred on the side of too much) and I had no idea how to determine if it was working, so I don’t know what to make of this product. The good thing is that I still have plenty, so now that I’m not using the oxygen nail treatment, I will apply it directly to my nails to see if it helps with the ridges.

drop of julep hand cream in palm of handHand Cream with SPF 30 – Once everything else was applied and dried, I finished off with the hand lotion since the scrub makes your skin more vulnerable to the sun. This hand cream has SPF 30 protection and it really minds me of a thicker version of sunblock. Luckily, it doesn’t have that weird smell but it is the same kind of white. It applies non-greasy but I felt it wasn’t as hydrating as I would like. I would probably pair this with one of my non-SPF but more moisturizing hand creams to get the best of both worlds.

All in all it was great to test these products and get a chance to find out if I’d ever want to buy them. Depending on your needs and preferences, you might want to purchase some of them to use as well.

365great Day 81: loading zone parking

365great challenge day 81: loading zone parkingOnce upon a time I used to look at cars parked in loading zone spots and think to myself, “Who do they think they are?” It didn’t help that pretty much all the cars were luxury brands, which gave me the impression that a sense of entitlement is what drove these people to park there. Perhaps they felt they were above the law (or that a “measly” fine wasn’t a big deal). Little did I know that they were perfectly within reason! A few years back, I was told that yellow loading zones are ok to park in at night and on Sundays*. Whaaat?! Seriously? I didn’t believe it at first, but lo and behold, some research brought me to the LADOT page where it’s all laid out for you.

“In the City of Los Angeles, yellow curb zones are effective 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Parking is permitted during non-restricted times.”

Amazing! Ever since, these yellow loading zones have been a sort of golden ticket for me. I feel like I’ve won the lottery each time I’m able to snag one and that I share a “dirty” little secret with few others in the city. I even took a picture to commemorate the first I parked in one (pictured). I smile to myself when I pull away from my spot and find that the car behind me wanted the spot but then left when they saw it was a loading spot. I used to be that naive. It’s like being in some inner circle and now you’re invited too. Just don’t steal my spot next time I need to park in LA. Thanks. 😉 Isn’t that knowledge just great?

*I’m strictly referring to territories within LADOT’s control. Please check with your local Department of Transportation to see what the rules are in your city..

I was going to post these photos from the May FMS photo challenge but the internet gave out on me yesterday and trying to do it on my phone is way too challenging.

Hello, June. Here’s a look back at my pics for May’s FMSPhotoADay photo challenge! Little did I realize I used the same picture twice. Oops! Guess that’s what the monthly view teaches me… how to see the big picture. 😉 Check out previous months’ postings too.

365great Day 80: crab legs

365great challenge day 80: crab legsOh crab legs, how delicious they are! And eating them is just not as rewarding if you don’t crack them yourself. I love getting a bucket or platter of steaming legs and cracking my way through them, occasionally dipping in butter. They’re lip-smackingly awesome! I’ll even wear a bib if I have have to. 😉 These tasty fellows are perfect with just a little bit of seasoning. To me, it’s not just about eating them, but it’s about the entire experience that makes you feel like you earned that meat. It can be hard work on your hands and mouth, but then it’s such a treat for your taste buds. I also like how it makes you slow down when eating – you can’t exactly gobble up a ton of crab meat at a time when you’ve got to pick and pull and prod and push your way around those hard shells. The flavor, the labor – it’s great!.

Sleeping ways

How do you like to sleep?

I’m a pretty wacky sleeper. I usually start on my back and have my legs splayed every which way, then throughout the night I toss and turn to either side, legs swinging along with my torso. I also have a tendency to kick the blanket off my legs – they like to “breathe.” Usually the only part of me that needs the blanket is my tummy. The rest could be with blanket thrown off at any point. Only in the colder months do I calm down a bit and keep all but one leg, foot, knee covered.

I tend to take up a lot of room too, with my legs bent out to either side or my arms out or above my head. And since I move a lot I tend to need a pretty wide area to move about. I never stay on my sides for long because of the pressure on my hips. About two years ago I suddenly couldn’t lean on my right side anymore because it was so uncomfortable on my hip. Things have eased up since then but it’s still pretty uncomfortable for me.

Meanwhile, Panda likes the blanket tucked in tight, especially under his chin (I can’t stand that). He will often sleep with his arms up over head but rarely out to the sides. He also rolls to either side, but doesn’t quite flail like me. He does tend to take up a lot of blanket though!

My cat Missy? She’s a belly-up, arms up, waist twisted kind of sleeper. 😉

365great Day 79: mangosteens

365great challenge day 79: mangosteenA lot of you have probably never gotten the pleasure of trying mangosteen before. Let me tell you, you need to get yourself to Southeast Asia to track some down! They are a fascinating fruit, with a crazy red shell that dyes your fingers like pomegranate but then a white interior with slices like a citrus fruit. Their skin is very thick and protective and you’d never guess the inside would be such a contrast to the outside. The consistency of the flesh inside looks kind of like a banana, but when you bite in it’s like… well, nothing I can think of. Their seeds are almost the size of almonds and the taste is a lovely sweet juicy thing. Until you eat it yourself, you just can’t understand. I am not only intrigued by the uniqueness of this fruit, but I love the taste as well. If only they were more available around the world! If I could eat them whenever I want, that would be so great.
