Horsing around

When Panda and I were in Hawaii, we took half a day to go out to Kualoa Ranch, where we went on a two-hour horseback riding tour. Along the way, we ran across some chickens, cattle, and rebellious horses.

Here we came across a hen and some chicks. I’m surprised they stayed so close to the horses!

The cattle stared at us suspiciously, but decided they’d let us pass without charging.

My horse Toby kept going his own pace, which meant getting a fair distance behind the rest, so every now and then he’d trot to catch up. Bumpy!

Here are some of the horses that weren’t “on the job” that day. I can’t tell if these two were nuzzling, neck-wrestling, or fighting.

If you look closely, you can see a bunch of teeny little fish swimming around! They look like minnows that belong in a creek.

We were wandering around the Hilton Waikiki Village and came across this little habitat! I’ve never seen penguins, turtles, and fish all living together. Pretty cool!

Animals just do what they do and don’t care if you’re watching or not. Meanwhile, people have the exact opposite problem and get too self-conscious.

Out off the coast of Oahu, we got to enjoy a ride on the ocean before hopping in for some snorkeling! At this location, there were a bunch of sea turtles hanging out and just as we arrived, we saw this guy coming up for air. I was basically within arms reach of another one when it came up for air later on – soooo cool!

It’s hot out in the eastern part of the states! With summer in full force, we went to enjoy the neighborhood…

green anole lizard at dole plantation in hawaii

At the Dole Plantation, we spotted this little green lizard (an anole, I believe).

It froze on this leaf and I got distracted by a rooster, only to look back and find...

...it turned brown on me! Ah I wish I had noticed/caught it, but I had no idea it could morph like that.

In retrospect, I can see that it was already starting to turn brown in the middle picture. Alas, I figured it was just a green lizard so I never thought to watch it so closely.

Tomorrow I head off to Hawaii, and leave behind my cats. So here’s a clip of Missy doing her thing and massaging my childhood blanket…

Also not to be left out, a picture of Molly lounging in one of her favorite spots.

dog indoors looks out window at squirrel outside

One day, Blue got really excited and alert. He strained against his leash, trying to get at the window. As it turns out, there was a squirrel out there.

That squirrel was lucky there was a wall of glass between it and Blue, or else it'd be running for its life.

The slightly creepy black bird

Neither of these videos do justice to what it was like to see this bird in person – the first is its piercing chirp (not quite as intimidating as it was) and the second is it bouncing around on cattails (hardly any bouncing appears to be happening). Nonetheless, they give you an idea of my encounter with the creature that is usually perched atop the pavilion in the background, staring down at you.
