Panda day

Today is Panda’s birthday!  It’s fitting that he’s celebrating another year just as he gets ready to embark on the next stage of his life.  In just a few days, he’s off to the east coast to start a job, a career.  It’s also his first time living outside of Los Angeles, so there will be a lot of learning and adjusting to do.  Hopefully the worst of the storms has passed for this year, so he won’t have to deal with driving in the snow.  Living so far from is already going to be a challenge in and of itself, weather notwithstanding.

This Sunday will be the last full day we get to spend together for a long time and I am excited to be sharing some of our favorite things together, including good food and good friends.  Of course we will also have some alone time to enjoy each other’s company before our primary mode of interaction becomes Skype.  Back when I went to Singapore for a few months, we had been through this challenge (in addition to a pretty drastic time difference).  While this won’t be as bad, it will have to sustain for longer, so I am preparing myself for some tough times.

The good thing is that this is a great opportunity for him to grow and hopefully within a few years I can move out there (or he will decide to try something else and we will both move to the same place).  It’s too early to say what might happen until then, but we’ve weathered a storm before and I am confident we can do it again.  I just hope that we are able to visit each other every few weeks or months.  Things are so much better when I can share them with him.

New Year’s Eve gathering

My parents and I went to a gathering of some family friends down in Newport today to celebrate the upcoming year. There were six of us “kids” (the under 30s) and we had fun chatting over lunch at the kids’ table, playing some Wii Fit (I learned I am very well balanced on the board), and singing karaoke songs, English and Chinese. I drank a lot of tea and tasted a cool one from Hawaii with a macadamia flavor.

A funny moment came when I first arrived and the host daughter introduced me to my mom, not knowing we were related. 😛 “Why yes, actually, I have met her…” Haha! and here are some shots of the food we enjoyed:

The main attraction: lots and lots of food!

This gigantic bar of chocolate came with its own hammer so you can break it apart.

Thanksgiving traffic nightmare!

Ok, I get it, people (especially Americans) love their holidays.  But really, do you have to clog my commute on the rare occasion I get off of work early?  It would have been great getting off work today at 3 except for the fact that I had to drive for three and a half hours to get home!  Seriously?!?!  I mean, I was grateful when my morning commute was only an hour (compared to the typical 1.5-2 hrs), but that was MORE than made up for at night when I still didn’t manage to get home before the sun set.

I fully went through two bags of Veggie Straws & Chips, a huge bottle of water (from my KOR ONE hydration vessel), and my handy dandy tea mug.  And that was still with an hour and a half to go.  By that time I had to urinate so bad that I couldn’t bear to pull out my final “bottle” of water (it was in an anti-bottle, actually) to drink.  I was crawling at about 2-3 MPH for a good 3-5 miles as the 405 merged into the 5.  It was absolute insanity!  Why can’t people commute to their families tomorrow during the day, when I’m not exhausted from work and driving?

I’m definitely going to rest as much as I can this long weekend after that ordeal!

Curious observations

I spent a lovely holiday with Panda’s family having a BBQ, then going home to enjoy the night with my mom, but along the way, some strange things caught my attention.

It all started on my drive back home after spending the day at his family’s.  I noticed on the opposite side of the freeway, a silver/gray Honda type vehicle on the side of the road, left side tilted up and that front wheel still spinning.  Apparently it had hit a pole of some sort, which seemed to be the thing propping it up at that strange angle.  The front of the car had a dent in the middle, with smoke coming out of the hood.  It was a bizarre thing to see and I almost didn’t believe it, what with all the TV show crime and accident scenes I’ve been seeing.  As I passed by, the driver’s side door opened slowly (remember that the car was tilted on its side, so gravity was working against them) and I saw an arm or a leg push out.  As I contemplated whether or not I should exit and turn around, I noticed an SUV type vehicle pull over.  It looked like they were getting help, so I continued on my way, but puzzled about that incident the entire drive home.

Then when I exited from the freeway and began to drive through my town, I noticed groups of people camped out on the lawns of businesses.  It seems that they wanted to get a really good view of the fireworks that night, which I think were coming from the town center or the nearby amusement park.  A couple of lanes of the road had been blocked off, which made no sense to me, since there was nothing there.  The right-turn lane of the street I was on was blocked off, but traffic going in that direction wasn’t stopped, so I couldn’t figure out why coned it off!  How bizarre.  Were they saving room on the streets for patrol cars to use later?  Were they actually going to block off all the roads in that area closer to the time the fireworks were due to start?  Were they going to allow people to use the road to camp out too?  Or maybe they were getting ready to set up traffic stops and sobriety checkpoints?  Who knows.

Finally, I passed by our postal office and noticed that the flag was at half-mast.  Pondering the situation, I couldn’t come up with any explanation as to why that could be.  Independence Day is a holiday of celebrations, not commemoration, like Memorial Day would be.  So it couldn’t be due to that.  I figured someone must have died, but I wondered if it was a local thing or national thing.  When I made it home, I did some digging around and discovered that President Obama ordered flags at half-mast for a couple of days, to commemorate the late Senator Robert Byrd.  I hadn’t really heard of the man, so I wonder if they always lower the flag for Senators or if this man was a particularly special one.  Apparently it was supposed to be raised to full mast for today (after all, it is a happy holiday), but seeing as postal workers are all off, it’s no surprise they just left it.  Makes it easier, since it’s to be half-mast for Monday and Tuesday anyway.

And there you have it, a 50-minute drive full of peculiar things that I just about managed to figure out.  This is how my curious mind works.

A day of fools

Today was a fun, playful day as Starbucks introduced its new sizes – Plenta and Micra, and Google decided to give props to one of my former hometowns by changing their name to Topeka.  I’m sure there were plenty of other fun pranks out there from similar high-profile companies, but these are the two I happened across today.

Some of my coworkers actually believed the Starbucks one and I’m sure many people wished the Plenta was for real.  After all, that’s about how much coffee they could power through in a day.  I really enjoyed the quirky uses they suggested for both sizes after you’re done with your drink and that picture of the two guys is brilliantly hilarious.  How could anyone take that seriously?  Lol.

The Google one taught me something I didn’t know about (which isn’t surprising, since Google – excuse me, Topeka is always coming up with crazy new products).  Their concept of that sort of ultra-fast internet connection could propel us even further into developing cool new technologies and ways of virtual interaction.  I’m imagining something straight out of Star Wars here, with holographic 3D images.  Can’t help it.

Oh, and a random unrelated thought – all 5 of my iPhone app updates today were iPad related.  Not like that does me any use!

parking meters covered for the holidays for free parking

UCLA spreading some love!

(It says FREE Metered Parking, in case you were wondering.  And let me add that parking is LA is not cheap, so this is a rare wonder… probably only because all the college kids are gone for break!)

Stuffing yourself? Think again.

I wasn’t going to write a Thanksgiving-themed entry since the holiday hardly felt like one and I don’t like holidays dictating my writing, but I happen to want to write about something that is somewhat related.

Can you fit under that?

Can you fit under that?

As I was driving home yesterday (stuck in afternoon traffic that I’d all but forgotten about until right before I was planning on leaving), there were these big rigs that were right next to me (and nicely blocking the sunlight for me!).  I could see under the one directly to my left to the one in the lane next to it and I almost felt as if my car could fit under them.  That got me thinking about whether or not someone can lay down on the ground and fit under the lower parts of the vehicle (particularly where the wheels are and under the head).

I recalled hearing about someone who jumped in front of an oncoming subway and pushed the person down there onto the ground.  The two of them made it out unscathed because the subway car was high enough on the tracks that they could fit underneath.  Or maybe it way just one guy or maybe it was under a train.  Either way, you get the idea, right?  Well, I was thinking of this in terms of those big rigs and it looked shady.  The lowest part looks too far down for anyone to not get caught and dragged along.

Next Thanksgiving, spare a turkey!

Next Thanksgiving, spare a turkey!

Well, it suddenly occurred to me that I was thinking of someone my size.  What of fat people?  I hope that this is not too insensitive, but obese people would definitely not fit under any of these vehicles!  Sooo it goes to reason that if you are extremely overweight and one day need to save your own life by fitting underneath a subway, train, or big rig… well, you’re screwed.  Hence, all those people who stuffed themselves full tonight should think again before fattening themselves.  Who knows, you might just need to save yourself from getting run over and that extra inch around your waist could make the difference.

And there is my Turkey Day entry.  😛

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day has arrived!  I’m stoked because this is my first time spending it with someone special.  Not that my friends aren’t special and I didn’t have fun going out with them, but… you know.  And though I’m not into the whole gift-giving thing (nor do I expect Panda to pay for my meals), I do like this holiday in the sense that it is supposed to be a celebration of love and loved ones.  Granted, this holiday has undergone a fair share of commercialization, but when it boils down to it, I hope people realize that it’s really another time to appreciate the people you care about.  Would it hurt to do it in a cheesy, gaudy way occasionally?

Remember those cheap little cardboard Valentine’s cards from elementary school?  As I a child I always made sure my mom got me more than enough, just in case…  I even spent time to decide which card design would best fit which friend as I gingerly traced out their names on the cards, hoping I didn’t mess up.  There’d also be the lollipops or Sweetheart candies to distribute along with the little note.  Then came the day to bring your baggie to class and exchange them with your classmates (and just to be safe, you could give one to everyone in your class, whether you wanted to or not).  It was always fun to see what themes people chose and any special messages they may have written for you.  I secretly hoped that my crush would give me a unique card and use it to reveal his feelings for me, but alas, it never worked out.  So at the end of the day, you’d return home, baggie now filled with cards from your frinds and classmates.  At what age do you stop doing this?  I can’t seem to remember, but I think it was 2nd or 4th grade for me.

More recently, I had celebrated by gathering with my single girlfriends to enjoy an evening together.  Here and there there’d be a guy on my mind who I was loosely interested in and reminded of as I watched lovers throughout the day.  It generally wasn’t a big deal to me and I even spent the day taking three midterms last year!  To reward myself for that rough day, I went online and bought a longboard from Loaded.  Other times I was wrapped up in helping with fundraising events centered around the day with Valentine-grams and roses to deliver to students around campus.

This year, though, I am spending Valentine’s Day with my sweetheart.  We don’t have any fancy plans and I think we might even wander around Costco, just because he has not gone in years and it’s one of those things we’ve been meaning to do.  Whatever we do end up doing, all I care about is that I get to spend the whole day with him.  And that is what counts.  🙂

So no matter what plans you may or may not have for the day, just remember the loved ones who surround your life.  And why not play, “Single Ladies” and get your groove on too?  😉
