Festival of Books

It’s that time of year again!  This weekend was the LA Times Festival of Books and I went with some friends.  This year they had a mobile scavenger hunt with the prize of an iPad.  Panda and I decided to participate and we invited our friend, Houdini, to join in.  Saturday, Houdini and I spent a good 4-5 hours running around the UCLA campus answering clues to the hunt.  I unfortunately took a hit when I got a question wrong, but that allowed Houdini to get a perfect score on the hunt… let’s just hope he gets enough bonus points for pictures to outdo the competition!  That’d be awesome, considering it’s his first time to the fair!

The focus this year really centered around the scavenger hunt, which was really a nice way to check out most parts of the event.  From the poetry corner to the kids’ stuff to the cooking stage to the news booths, we saw a lot!  It was also nice to get out on such a beautiful weekend rather than lazing around all day like I usually would.  I do need to get (and stay) more active and though my back hurt and my legs were aching after the first day, it felt good to be outside moving around.  I also ran into some random people, which is always fun.

I found that this year I didn’t really have an interest in checking out the booths like I have in previous years.  Perhaps it is because there were so many people there that anything I might have wanted to do would have taken up a lot of time standing in line.  Plus, I wasn’t out to buy anything, so none of those booths interested me, and I’ve never been one for book signings or readings or cooking shows.  It’s nice to just hang out and enjoy the atmosphere and catch bits of performances as I pass.

Oh, and then today we got word that Houdini won the iPad from a raffle we entered on Saturday!  Pretty awesome, especially considering we were really donating money to help homeless people when we bought those tickets.  I remember seeing it was a 32 gig one, which is better than the one the LA Times has up for grabs from the scavenger hunt!  That one seems out of our reach though.  And as Panda and I were going through completing the hunt for him today, we were able to snag a really nice poster and a button, which was great for him since he has empty walls to fill and collects buttons.  🙂  All in all a great weekend, no?  If only I could have won that iPad so I could feel better about the iPod Touches that I no longer own…  😛

Life as a musical

Panda and one of my coworkers seem to love the idea of life being like a musical.  Whenever we walk, Panda will start singing a little tune he makes up to go with the rhythm of our footsteps.  My coworker always is talking about breaking out into song and dance (and apparently he’s sizing up everyone to see who he’d want to be near if this did happen, so he could be next to the better dancers).  Yeah, I’m surrounded by strange people.

When I was younger, I used to sing a lot too.  I think for me it stemmed in my upbringing.  My parents would sing old Chinese songs for no real reason as I was growing up.  In the car, we’d pop in a cassette or CD and sing along (that actually served a purpose: keeping my dad awake and alert while driving).  Around the house, they would do so without any accompaniment.  And there’s something really harmonious about singing or humming while gardening, which is something my mother loved to do.  I never saw any shame in singing in public and only in later years did I learn to tone it down.

This unconscious behavior got suppressed over the years as people always looked at me funny or asked me why I would burst into song.  Perhaps my voice is not that great, but I didn’t care.  It felt good and it felt right.  But nowadays, that doesn’t really happen and I wonder if that feedback affected me over the years until I got to this point, where I laugh and shake my head at people who sing randomly (or would like to).  It’s a pity, because I see nothing wrong with it.  I’d like to get in touch with that part of my behavior again.

What is so wrong or strange about singing in public anyway?  I find it to be a great way of expression, and usually a positive outlet.  Though I listen to certain types of songs when I am down and want to get sadness out of my system by having a bit of a cathartic release, I can’t ever recall wanting to sing a melancholy tone to express myself.  I can imagine a sad song being sung at organized events and the like, but not really by a lone person walking the streets.  Instead, I’m always inspired by happy, positive, upbeat feelings – and  it brings a smile to almost everyone’s faces, whether or not they actually like my singing.  The spontaneous desire to sing tends to go hand-in-hand with smiling and skipping.

It would be really cool if life were a musical and people burst out into song and dance more often.  It’d certainly make my world a happier place.  For now, I’ll just settle for the bit of singing Panda and I do from time to time, usually without realizing it’s happening.  There must be something deep down that drives us to do it and why should we deny ourselves that sort of innate joy?  It’s a beautiful thing, really.

Why computers should be cleaned

If you’ve had your laptop or desktop for a few years and the fan is having trouble cooling the device like it used to, it’s more than likely you are the victim of a massive dust bunny.  It’s a fun adventure to take apart your computer to clean it out and help lengthen its life.  After all, you don’t want it overheating and oftentimes, that can be caused by these dust bunnies!

Good Vibrations

Panda and I went to a performance by the West Los Angeles Symphony at Royce Hall tonight (called Good Vibrations).  I enjoyed their unusual lineup with solos by a harpist and marimba-ist (is that what they’re called?).  These two instruments don’t get the limelight enough, so it was refreshing to hear them in their glory.  Yet, what I noticed most was the fact that the two ladies playing these instruments got to wear beautiful evening gowns whereas the rest of the orchestra wore black, as is traditional.  Is it the fact that they had solo acts or is it because of the unusual nature of their instruments?  Either way, it was a great way for them to stand out even more and truly perform to us the audience.

I also noticed that I enjoyed the energy level of certain performers, whereas the more reserved ones decreased my enjoyment of the music.  In particular there were a few who really moved with the music, so I liked to watch them most.  But occasionally, my eyes were drawn to the one lady who barely moved at all, even when the music was loud and energetic.  Everyone else around her moved with forcefulness, but she was completely stiff, letting as little of her body do the work as possible.  It was really strange and really awkward to see.  I tried to avoid looking at her, but sometimes her lack of passion really stuck out like a sore thumb.

Also entertaining was the first celloist, who was a lady with a fun outfit on of black laced with gold in a full pantsuit type attire.  She looked a lot like one of my old high school friends, who I showed Panda on Facebook and he agreed.  They had the same short brown hair with thin bangs that fell in a stringy sort of manner.  And of course, my friend also played a stringed instrument, not like that was much of a coincidence.  I was greatly entertained by that resemblance though.  I could totally see my friend being just like that lady in the future, performing in an orchestra.

Rounding off the night were the comments from Panda, saying he liked the hair of this and that guy (one with crazy gray curls that reminded me of a doll my mom used to have – except that doll’s hair was blonde – and one with white hair pulled back in a ponytail).  Certainly not the hair styles I would expect him to aspire to.  He also started to point out the couple of men he thought had day jobs as engineers because they “looked smart.”  -___-  As if only engineers can be smart.  I do wonder if the West Los Angeles Symphony is composed of professional musicians or more of hobbyists.  Perhaps I should do some research.

It was a fun night and loved that it was completely free!  We had a nice stroll/speed walk there and a refreshing jog back.  I need to get more active again!

Lonely

I’ve gotten so used to having Panda around that it’s been really weird this week without him around.  He’s at home on spring break and now I struggle to find things to do with my time at night.  Funny, it’s not like when he was around we were hanging out, but just his presence calms me.  Now, I am on my own and the games I distract myself with aren’t as engaging, TV shows aren’t as interesting, and I don’t have the patience to waste my time online.  I just want to be able to know that he will be here at the end of my work day.  In fact, there’s really no motivation for me to leave work earlier rather than later, now that he’s away.  Coincidentally, my boss is out of town as well, which means I’m not as busy with work either.

The good thing is that I’ve got a friend who’s around and we met up for dinner last night.  We happened to run into a mutual friend, so the three of us can grab dinner together tomorrow night!  That will keep me occupied until things pick up again.  Still, I’m a little lost without Panda here to talk to and share my time with.  I am looking forward to next week, when he finally returns.  This will be the longest I don’t get to see him since I returned from Singapore!  I’ve found that my pattern on my own is different from when he is around.  Both are nice in their own ways, but I much prefer having him around than not.  I’ve been excessively tired these couple of days, perhaps because I haven’t been taking care of myself as much.  Even my train of thought writing this is all over the place… I suppose it’s time to call it a night and get some rest.

Happy Birthday

Today is Panda’s birthday!  On Sunday, he told me that it was his Chinese birthday, so I joked that he got a year younger in three days (because by the traditional Chinese measure, you’re 1 year old when you’re born, so he was technically 23, then turned 22 today).  🙂  Isn’t that a fun way of looking at things?

He’s a hard one to get things for, so I was worried for awhile, but I managed to conjure up a few small items and make them into a scavenger hunt of sorts.  That way, it’s a fun journey of discovery too!  It was simple and practical, which is exactly what works for us.  No need for fancy bells and whistles.  All in all a fabulous day.  😀

Been a long day, so a quick post for now…

I showed it in my video awhile ago; now here is a picture for posterity.  The wonderful cut I got from Panda.  😛

to-go ware chopsticksAs I was getting lunch at Kaya today, I noticed their chopsticks resemble the pair I have in my To-Go Ware set.  It reminded me of the day when Panda saw them and asked me why they were warped.  Months later, when another friend came back from grad school in the East Coast, he saw them and asked the exact same thing.  -____-  Whereas I and our other friend, a history major, saw them as artistic, they saw them as warped.  Wow.  A lesson in the differences between North and South campus majors!

See the gentle curving to give them more character?

At UCLA, North campus houses most of the humanities and social sciences and South campus houses most of the life sciences and physical sciences.  The School of Theater, Film, and Television is as north as you can get, while the School of Engineering is in the southern half.  We often joke about this separation, but in this case, there truly is a disparity between the way we interpret things.  North campus majors recognize the beauty and elegance of a twisted shape; South campus majors recognize a purposeless deformation.  Ultimately, we’re looking at the same thing, but our differing opinions of the chopsticks’ design would easily lead to a scenario where I buy them, only to have Panda return them as he wondered why I bought them at all. It’s funny, isn’t it, how differently we view the world?

I don’t know what program I’m supposed to be installing to be able to record a video from my webcam on my computer, so I have resorted to online methods.  Most programs I found don’t seem compatible with Windows 7 anyway. So here’s my attempt at the vlog I wanted to do before. The audio’s a bit harsh, so turn down your volume!

Jiminy Cricket

One day, Panda noticed a cricket on the wall.  He immediately wanted it out, but I saw that she just needed a warm place to stay.  Besides, being a female, she doesn’t chirp, so she wasn’t bothering anyone by being there.  Plus, crickets are considered good luck in Chinese culture, so I figured it’d be nice to have her around the place for a bit.  We eventually compromised by capturing her and keeping her in a ventilated container.  Panda didn’t like the idea of her running around the place and I didn’t like the idea of shooing her away.

We read that they like to eat rotting food, so I figured the pear core from earlier that day was suitable. Oh yeaaah, doesn't that mold look appetizing?

After two or three days, I was afraid we didn't have the conditions to keep her as a pet, so I decided it was time to release her outside.

She eventually hopped out of the container, made her way across the grass, and disappeared into a crack in the wall.
