When Panda and I had the fortune of staying at the Ritz-Carlton Marina del Rey for a few days, I was excited to document the experience. Here are some of the highlights from that stay; click on pics for the full size.

Square
This weekend Panda and I went to visit the Chivas goat farm (pictures to come in tomorrow’s post), where we encountered a cool device. It’s called Square and it’s a credit card scanning device that, combined with a smartphone app, make for a powerful tool for individuals and small businesses. This simple yet effective little gadget captivated me, so I decided to do some research. It turns out that not only the software download is free in the app store, but the hardware is also shipped to you for free! In fact, there is absolutely no cost to set up as long as you have a compatible smartphone, iPad, or iPod touch.
So here I was at the farm, taking a look at their products for sale: soaps, cremes, bath salts, chapstick… all made using goat’s milk rather than water. I just finished up a facial cream recently, so I was in the market for a new one. They had a lovely little jar of one, so I opted to get that, along with a clear complexion formulated facial soap for my acne. I figured since we drove all the way out there to see their goats, try some goat cheese dishes, enjoy the other animals, and get a massage, I might as well get some products to support their fabulous operation.
When it came time to pay, a gentleman was standing there with an iPad that had a little white square sticking out from the audio jack. I pulled out my credit card and he swiped it across the plastic square. On the screen, my card was processed, authorized, and then there was a line for my signature. Turning the screen to me, he had me sign. I hesitated for a fraction of a second, wondering if I should look for a pen-like device to sign with, but then went ahead with my finger, since that just seemed the right thing to do. With my signature captured, the transaction was complete and I was given the option to enter my email or phone number to receive a receipt. My receipt included not only the items I bought, but a map of where the transaction took place!
How awesome is that? Any mobile device that can connect to the internet when you need to do a sale can potentially be used as a platform for Square. At this point it is available to many Androids and nearly all mobile Apple products. This really lowers the barrier to entry that individuals and small businesses may have had in the past, where it was not worth it to invest in one of those large credit card swiping machines, pay a monthly fee, and pay a 1-3% transaction fee to the credit card companies. In fact, this just about eliminates the barrier entirely, since a good portion of people already have or can afford to get one of the devices that Square works with.
I can just imagine an artist or crafts person who had trouble selling things on the fly before because of the cash-only restriction they had, now being able to travel all over the country, accept just about any card that exists, and all for a flat rate of 15 cents plus 2.75% for a card swipe and 3.5% for a manual card entry. Sure, it might be higher than some cards, but for the convenience, you’d more than likely come out on top since many sales opportunities would have been lost otherwise. How great would it be to create things wherever you wanted, and be able to sell your items to pretty much anyone you ran into on the street?
And of course people in the service industries can make use of this too, getting paid immediately after walking the dogs for your neighbor or teaching the local kids how to swim. Business can now be conducted location-independently, and with less foresight. It’s certainly easier to convince someone to buy something from you or take you up on a service if they don’t need to have cash on them. Now I wish I had such a business so I could make use of this great product and service! Too bad I’m not very good with creating things that I can sell.
Outdated: receipts
I hate receipts. They take up space in my purse, clutter up my wallet, and rarely get looked at afterward. I have more than I’d ever like of ones I’ll never use and never can find the one I need when I want it. Why bother? I mean, initially they were a good idea, but now that technology has developed so far, it’s time for an electronic receipt to automatically send to your credit card and/or email account. No waste of paper, still keeps a record, and it’s so quick and easy to keep them on file electronically!
Plus, the benefit of being able to organize them better and make them searchable will make retrieving that receipt you wanted so much more convenient. You can file by company name, by price, by date, by category… the possibilities are aplenty! I can’t believe we’re still relying on paper sheets that get lost, turn black with heat, and generally are never put to the good use they were designed for. It’s time to update this habit and digitize the entire process. So one of these days I am going to start a company to take care of just that. Until then, don’t steal my idea! 😛
Time Warner fail
Well, yet again Time Warner has failed us here in LA, leaving Panda’s apartment without internet or television service. This has consistently occurred on a monthly basis and their repair trucks can be seen on our neighborhood streets a good 2-3 times a week. Not a good sign at all. so here I am stuck blogging on my iPhone, with little heart to put together a nicer entry.
It’s amazing how this happens time and time again. At first, Panda would call in and get a month or a week free, but he just did so this weekend when this same thing happened (albeit not for as long). It’s gotten to the point where even that doesn’t make up for the inconvenience and loss of productivity.
I did enjoy the peace and quiet of not having so much buzzing around me, but I’d rather get to choose when I take a step back from the hubbub of modern life. I didn’t even feel like reading a business magazine I had been meaning to read for months now. Situations like this put a damper on my entire mood and make me wish that TW took better care if their customers. I can’t wait until we leave this place and I find a place near work – I’ll know then to avoid Time Warner at all costs.
A day of fools
Today was a fun, playful day as Starbucks introduced its new sizes – Plenta and Micra, and Google decided to give props to one of my former hometowns by changing their name to Topeka. I’m sure there were plenty of other fun pranks out there from similar high-profile companies, but these are the two I happened across today.
Some of my coworkers actually believed the Starbucks one and I’m sure many people wished the Plenta was for real. After all, that’s about how much coffee they could power through in a day. I really enjoyed the quirky uses they suggested for both sizes after you’re done with your drink and that picture of the two guys is brilliantly hilarious. How could anyone take that seriously? Lol.
The Google one taught me something I didn’t know about (which isn’t surprising, since Google – excuse me, Topeka is always coming up with crazy new products). Their concept of that sort of ultra-fast internet connection could propel us even further into developing cool new technologies and ways of virtual interaction. I’m imagining something straight out of Star Wars here, with holographic 3D images. Can’t help it.
Oh, and a random unrelated thought – all 5 of my iPhone app updates today were iPad related. Not like that does me any use!
Advocacy
I’m an advocate. Of what? Well, anything that I like! I’m not the type of consumer who happily uses products without sharing with friends and family. In fact, I’m often selling them on certain brands and converting them to what I enjoy. It ranges from free things to useful things to just plain cool things. It’s often in technology or green products, but could be in anything that has caught my attention (take a look at my wishlist and sharelist). In the coming weeks I want to start a series of posts showcasing some of these products and services I like best. And perhaps, just perhaps, you’ll be convinced too. 😛 I’m just sayin’…
Let’s Relax Spa
I’ve realized that I write a lot of my thoughts and opinions, alluding only occasionally to experiences, so I’ll now attempt to do some more storytelling and share some of my adventures.
Let’s start with a wonderful spa experience at a place called Let’s Relax. I discovered it when I was in Phuket, Thailand. At a getaway place like that, I couldn’t resist indulging in some spa services, so I looked up a few sites and went for this one because they were one of the few places with a hot stone massage and of those, had the best price. I opted for the Executive Hide Away package because it included the hot stone massage that was my main target, plus it included an herbal steam (a nice bonus) and a facial that I probably needed. A three-hour experience, all for 3600 Baht (at the current exchange rate, around $107.37). Not bad at all!
Well to start off with, I didn’t get the best of directions and probably should have copied the map better. The bus driver and my fellow passengers had no idea what I was looking for and couldn’t tell me where to get off. By a stroke of luck, I was looking out the right side of the bus and the building had a large sign, so I found it. I got off the bus and made my way to the entrance, where I was greeted by a nice little landscaping in the front area and huge wooden doors. As soon as I stepped in, I knew I had chosen wisely. This place was impeccably clean and very nicely decorated. It was quiet and peaceful and the ladies working there were all well-mannered and well-dressed.
After I checked in and paid, I was given a cooling green tea to sip while waiting. All too soon, a lady was there to lead me up. We got on the private elevator and I changed into a bathrobe in a nice bathroom before she took me to my first stop: the sauna. Well, I guess herbal steam room is more appropriate, but you get the idea. I had chosen the scent I wanted (I think it was lavender, but now my memory fails me) and got the place to myself. I sat and lay on the cool stone inside as my lungs filled with the aroma of sweet flowers. It’s hard to stay in there for long, so I had to come out a few times and made good use of the ice cold water they provided. When time was nearly up, I came out and took a nice rinse in the shower to clean up and cool down.
I was then taken to another room for my hot stone massage. I was given a funny little black underwear thing to put on, as well as a shower cap and towel. A nice little lady came in with the hot rocks and began to work on my weary muscles. She used two stones to stimulate my muscles and would trace the bones in my ankles or other areas where it felt really good to have something hot and firm running along it. Sometimes it would just be one stone or her hands and some lotion. The heat of the stones was just enough to leave a burning trail wherever it went, but certainly not enough to burn or hurt. She knew just how long to leave the heat there before it would start to generate more pain than relaxation. I wondered how her hands could handle the stones – as far as I could tell, she did not use gloves or anything to protect herself from the heat. When she wrapped up a few stones for me to lie on to soothe my back, I began to see how the prolonged heat could cause discomfort. We made a quick adjustment to protect me from the heat a bit more and I comfortably lay there for awhile. At the end, she had me sit in positions I’d never tried before, then pushed or pulled just the right way to make my neck and back crack. I’d never been cracked like that before and I imagine that’s what they’d do at a chiropractor’s. I fully intend on finding out one day.
When that was complete, it was time for the final installment – a facial. I hadn’t been given a choice of treatment type, so I’m assuming they used a generic one or chose for themselves what was best for my skin type. As usual, I fell asleep during the process. There’s something so soothing about lying there with someone massaging your face. When I woke up, I was given a little hairbrush to straighten out the mess that I’d gotten since coming out of the shower. Back in the lobby, I was given a warm cup of ginger tea and an almond cookie before being sent on my way. It was a wonderful way to end and I felt invigorated as I departed!
If I get the chance, I’d definitely want to do that again. It was a great service experience. Next time I’m opting for the four-hand herbal massage… two hours of synchronized movements from two masseuses at 1400 Baht! How many people have four hands massaging them at once? Until then, I’ll dream of going back, or getting the unique jade stone massage at Le Petite Retreat, right here in LA.
