Shopping style

I’m a “ponder a lot before buying” kind of person.  Usually I don’t get something unless it falls into two categories:

  1. I’ve been meaning to get something like this
  2. I’ve been researching and wanting this

The first type is the spur-of-the-moment sort of purchase for me.  While I didn’t have that exact product in mind, or any specific product really, it’s something that has been in the back of my mind.  So I’ve been considering it and when I see something that is close enough and good enough, I might just pounce.  It gives me the satisfaction of an unexpected surprise but still with some forethought so I don’t feel too impulsive.

The second type is the really thought-out sort of purchase, where I noticed the product before, checked it out in store and online, and waited for a sale or good deal to come along.  Sometimes I do get a nice deal on it, sometimes I just reach a point where I feel like it’s worth it at full price, and sometimes I wait so long that I miss it.  When I do get an item though, it feels really rewarding – like I accomplished a goal that I’ve had for awhile.

Because I don’t usually buy things the first time I come across it, I tend to walk around a store getting tempted by this and that, putting them into my cart, then reconsidering before checking out.  Much of the time, I end up walking out with nothing because I reasoned that none of the items I got were really worth it at that time.  Sometimes all I needed was to hold it and have it for a brief time to feel satisfied.  I’m pretty good at convincing myself out of purchases most of the time.

Of course, there are just times where I splurge on something I never meant to, but I like to think that most of my purchases are reasonably vetted.  😛  I’ve yet to meet someone who goes around a store filling up a cart only to end up buying nothing, so speak up if you’re like that too!  I imagine most people either don’t put the item in the cart in the first place or buy it if they do.  Do you agree?

Curated craze

I subscribe to a random smattering of newsletters and daily deal sites, one of which is blissmo.  Earlier in the week, I got an email with a special offer that piqued my interest – sign up for a blissmobox membership and get a special edition box free!  I’ve been aware of these subscription-based programs that offer a box of curated goods each month, but I had never gotten into them.  However, after looking into blissmoboxes, I felt that for $19/box (or just $17.54 if you count the bonus one too) it was worth a shot.  After all, I’m a sucker for trying new products and what better way than to let the people of blissmo pick out some eco-friendly ones for me?

This experience got me thinking about this whole “curated” trend that’s been going around.  From daily deals that are curated by experts to monthly themed boxes curated by the team at a company, options are popping up everywhere.  You can go for environmentally-friendly products like I did, or choose from food only, beauty products, fashion, and countless other angles.  I won’t talk about daily deals today, since this whole monthly box thing is my newest interest.  I love the idea because you get introduced to a bunch of cool new products without having to scour the aisles yourself.  Plus, who doesn’t enjoy receiving a package?

While looking into what the latest blissmobox contained, I discovered a blogger who reviewed a bunch of these services.  I’m pretty baffled by how many she subscribes to, but if you cut out shopping in stores and buying snacks yourself, I can see how it wouldn’t cost too much more to exclusively use these subscriptions.  There’s definitely a strong appeal to getting on this trend, whether it’s purely because you like to receive packages or you’re actually looking to sample a variety of products to help you choose what to use in your daily life.  In fact, I almost convinced myself that it wouldn’t be so bad if I subscribed to just one more…

I remember when I got a mystery gift bag from Burt’s Bees; it was really exciting to open it up and discover what they had put in there for me.  Similarly, one of the perks of being involved with Opportunity Green is the chance to score some pretty awesome swag.  It’s just so satisfying to get a bag of stuff!  Emotionally, it can be very satisfying to sign up for one these curated boxes.  On the other hand, to a certain extent it can make sense practically as well, since you often see products that you aren’t sure about and wish you could try.  This way, you get a bunch that have been test driven by people at the company providing the boxes, so generally you can expect a pretty good product. You can then test them out yourself to figure out if it’s something you’d continue to use.  There’s also the fun factor of not knowing what you’ll get.  Most people enjoy a little bit of mystery and surprise to spice things up!

I personally can’t wait to get my first blissmobox and start experiencing this craze.  I’ll be sure to post up what I get in each box as they come!

Apple Valencia

I was at the mall today and walked by the Apple Store to find a familiar sight: people lining up! I first encountered this when I stood in line for their grand opening. Now people are doing it for the new iPhone 4S. There’s less cheering, but you get the idea…

The hunt for the perfect purse

Recently, I decided it was time for a new purse.  The one I’ve been using is just too large and flops over from not being full enough.  I had previously been using a smaller handbag sort of thing, which I switched out of when I wanted to be able to carry my iPad in my purse.  I also wanted to be able to separate my iPad into a different compartment so the inside of my purse wasn’t just a bottomless pit of stuff, but held things together better.  I hate digging around looking for something I know is in there, but got lost among the depths of the purse.

20110719-120955.jpg Armed with this criteria, I decided to do some shopping this weekend and came across a dark purple purse and a nice white one at Kohl’s.  I loved the color of purple purse, but it was a bit too long so the shape was kind of weird.  The white one looked really nice, but couldn’t fit my iPad in the center compartment that zipped up.  Other than that is was the perfect size and had all the compartments I was looking for, so I went ahead and bought it to give it a test drive.  I took these pictures to get Panda’s input and he pretty much thought the same thing, which gave me the final boost of confidence that I chose the right one.  And hey, if I changed my mind, I could always return or exchange it.  After all, Kohl’s has a pretty good return policy!

20110719-121004.jpg

Then at work today, I asked the opinion of one of my coworkers and she brought to my attention a detail on the purse that makes it a little less classy.  I really love the triangular holes and the black stitching, but part of the silver lining looked cheap.  So, I decided to continue with my search and see if I could find something that would meet my needs better.  This time it also came down to two purses, one white and one purple.  I really liked the brightness of the white on the black and white one, but the design was too flashy and not at all like me.  On the other hand, the color of purple one wasn’t my favorite, but I did enjoy the shape and the middle divider was deep enough to hold my iPad and zip up.

20110719-121016.jpg Between the light purple one from today and the white one I had purchased yesterday, I couldn’t decide which one was better, so I just got the purple one to give it a test run as well.  While I really like the shape of it, the external pockets, and the internal compartments, I love the look of a white bag!  We’ll see how this one feels as I use it tomorrow.  I was already noticing how much easier it was to have a purse closer to your body, rather than a huge hunk of a thing hanging down your shoulder.  As for the color, it’s not something a lot of people would choose and I am perfectly fine with that.  I don’t mind standing out in a crowd!

I’ve already switched everything over to the purple purse and I’m still having trouble deciding if I should just keep both, choose one, or keep looking. My coworker did mention going to the Fashion District, so if we can do that this weekend, I’d definitely be open to replacing these with something else that catches my eye.  It’s hard to know when something is good enough!  I can’t help but think of what there might be out there that I have not yet discovered.  If I don’t find something soon, I think that either of these purses would do the job just fine and I’d never know the better, so I won’t worry too much about it.

Oh, and all this has reminded me of why I’m never that interested in shopping!  A “quick” trip to look at some items quickly turns into an hour or two and next thing you know, the day is gone.

Cheapest cake ever!

carvel ice cream cake from ralph's at its cheapest price ever!

I bet you've never bought an ice cream cake for this cheap.

For Valentine’s day, Panda and I went to get an ice cream cake at Ralph’s. They were already discounted and we had a coupon, so it came out to be really cheap. Even more fortunate, the cashier accidentally started scanning someone else’s coupons to us and we got even more off! Ultimately it came down to 49 cents. Yup, awesome deal.

LoveSac PillowSac

examples of various pillowsac usesThis weekend I finally got the LoveSac PillowSac!  I mentioned back in May 2009 that I’ve wanted this thing for ages (about 8 and a half years by now) and now it’s here.  Originally I had wanted a SuperSac, the 6-foot diameter LoveSac, but after my friend lent me his indefinitely, I started to focus more on the PillowSac, which is cool because it is quite versatile.  I like that you can get the Rocker and set it up to be a rocking couch, or lay it out flat to be the size of a full mattress.  In addition, there are the fun shapes like fortune cookie and pea pod.  🙂

I’ve been following the Deals section of the LoveSac site, where they had an entire Fushia Berry Chenille set for $499 (more recently discounted to $399 for Valentine’s Day specials).  I liked this set because it came with the PillowSac and cover, a Rocker, and two throw pillows.  Purple’s my favorite color and I thought this unique pattern would be fun.  However, it’s absolutely tacky and impossible to match with anything, so I held off, not sure about that pattern.  Then, about three weeks ago, the Red Herringsuede one showed up for Valentine’s Day, also at $399, but without the throw pillows.  Now I couldn’t decide between the two.  The purple set had a better deal, but the red set is far easier to put in a room.

So, that’s how I ended up at the LoveSac store with Panda this weekend.  I figured I could take a look at the materials and decide once and for all which one made more sense.  Thank goodness I did too!  I had thought that the Herringsuede is a type of faux suede, but instead it’s actually a herringbone pattern renamed.  After seeing that, I would have rather had another more exciting texture.  Luckily enough, the store had a black Velvish PillowSac cover that it was selling for a discount because this cover was discontinued and it was their last one.  Even more fortunate was that they had an open PillowSac selling for a discount because it was not completely brand new and in the packaging.  The reason for that was it was used in a L’Oreal commercial that Beyoncé shot recently.  Pretty cool, huh?

So when I heard the price of the PillowSac and cover, I was pretty sold, but I wanted the entire set I’d seen online, Rocker and throw pillows too.  I asked the saleslady about that and she was able to offer slight discounts for both.  She had a couple of throw pillows to choose from and I thought the Red Herringsuede would actually be a great contrast on the black.  Having pillows that don’t match the PillowSac itself made things much more lively and exciting, otherwise those pillows sort of blend right in.  In the end, I’d be paying about $27 more at the store for a much more customized set with a cool back story.  And so that is how I ultimately got my new PillowSac set!

Target shopping

This weekend Panda and I spent some time browsing Target stores and I got quite the steal with two jackets for $5 and $4 each!  The original prices are something like $20-25, so I’m very pleased.  One is a plain black zip-up hoodie with these amazing embellished straps – you know the ones that you tighten the hood with – which are a silky satin kind of look.  The tips are even a nice metal piece rather than the cheap plastic ones you’d find normally.  The quality of the cloth is great and it feels really good, plus it is very warm!  The other is a fleece half-zip in my favorite color: purple!  It’s a little large for me, but I don’t mind having some outerwear be a bit loose on me.  And really, for less than $4, how could I pass it up?

I also bought myself a yoga mat so I won’t be the only one without one in class (and coincidentally, they went on sale this week).  After much back and forth between the 3mm and 5mm ones, I decided to splurge just a bit and go for the thicker one I’d been eying.  I mean, it was on sale and Panda had earned a $10 gift card he put towards it, so really it was costing me less than half the original price.  It also happened to be in purple, so that was perfect.  I did need to get it pretty soon so I wouldn’t have to borrow the instructor’s mat all the time.  It was really fortunate that I waited those extra couple of days and caught it on sale.  🙂

Then, today we found a jacket with a fuzzy inside lining, which I’ve been looking for for awhile.  I think it’s a men’s, but with jackets like that I don’t think you can really tell and it doesn’t matter too much.  I like that the outside is a fleece material – that seems to be my newest obsession.  Panda had gotten one of these a few weeks ago and I’d scoured the women’s section looking for one for myself, but they just don’t seem to have them anymore.  The one today happened to be small enough to fit just right, plus it was a clearance item, so I decided to get it and check that item off my list.

Now I feel very well-equipped for cool nights and the chilly days at the office, when I’m sitting at my desk all day freezing.  There was one more jacket I saw today that I really wanted – a white polar fleece zip-up, but it wasn’t so cheap that I just had to get it.  However, I do want to keep checking on the price of it over the next couple of days/weeks so I can grab it when it gets to a low enough price.  Panda has started to teach me and share with me the way that he shops: lots of browsing and finding awesome deals before buying!  It feels really rewarding when you get something for a unbelievably low price, so for things I can wait on, I definitely want to wait for them to go on sale or into clearance.

Mass buying

I went on a bunch of shopping outings today and bought way more than your usual amount.

First, it was at Costco, with 14 gallons of milk, 7 gallons of creamer, 9 lbs of sugar, 3000 packs of Splenda, and 3 gallons of soy milk.

shopping cart filled with cases of milk, creamer, sugar, sandwiches, and veggies

trunk filled with cases of creamer, milk, and other food

Then at Home Depot we took the entire display of buckets and then tracked down 4 more for a total of 30. Countless zip ties, nails, tape, and cords later, it was time to check out. Thankfully it all fit in my car ok.

Best Buy(ing) experience

For some Best Buy’s Reward Zone members, an invitation came to a private event from 7:30 to 9:30 last night.  The rechargeable USB batteries were an incentive, to be given to the first 50 people to arrive.  My mom and I decided to make the trip, invitation card and member ID in tow.  We weren’t in much of a rush, arriving just 15-20 minutes prior to the start of the event.  It’s a good thing we showed up when we did – a line of 40 had already formed!  Thankfully, batteries were given per member card, so we were well within the first 50 to show up and get a slip to exchange for the free gift.

After waiting in the cold for anywhere from 20-30 minutes, the line began to move.  We heard some hootin’ and hollerin’ in the distance, which confused us until we reached the entrance.  Inside, all the employees of the store were standing facing us, clapping and cheering and ushering us in.  A lot of thank yous were thrown out and one of the guys standing on the checkout counter was holding a big sign that thanked us for being their loyal customers (or something to that effect).  I felt at once silly and appreciated, which was a great way to start their two-hour event.  Now that’s what I call a great way to shop!  It’s a pity I didn’t have my camera on hand to document the moment!

A raffle was held every fifteen minutes, with $50 gift cards given out.  Employees swarmed the place, offering help to those with questions.  Games of Rock Band and DJ Hero were set up for people to try and a special offer on Wiis was front and center by the checkout stations.  All in all it was a festive time and a truly great way for Best Buy to make their members feel special while priming them to be in a spending and jolly mood.  Now that’s the kind of service and experience more companies should go for!  After all, happy customers make loyal customers.

usb batteries charging in computer ports

And so my computer does, giving them the juice they need.

pair of rechareable usb batteries

I got these lovely things at Best Buy from the RewardZone. 🙂

When I first heard of rechargeable batteries that can just be plugged into a USB port, I was concerned the the width of the USB port was juuust too big for the AA batteries, but alas, it’s a perfect fit!  I wonder if they designed them to work together like that or if it was just a happy coincidence.
