Get acquired month

What’s the deal?  Did April turn into everybody get acquired month?  Suddenly I’m receiving email after email notifying me that various products/services I use have been bought by some big-name company and how that will affect my experience with them.  When the first two came through I thought it was an interesting coincidence.  But I’ve received 4 or 5 and at this point, it’s got to be a pattern.  I guess it’s because of the social media bubble that’s going on right now (which my coworker was just telling me about yesterday).

Has anyone else received these notices?  The last one was for Delicious, which apparently was owned by Yahoo (I never knew) and is now bought out by the founders of YouTube.  As with all the others, the notice was basically saying that I’d need to agree to new terms and conditions as outlined by the entity that the product is now under.  Other than that, most things are business as usual and my account would transfer seamlessly.  It actually kind of reminds me of the rebranding we recently did at my company.  I sent out many emails detailing the changes, but also reassuring clients that the people haven’t changed and neither has the service.

With spring in the air, is change always imminent too?

Sony VAIO

I got my new laptop yesterday!  Receiving it wasn’t nearly as exciting as I had hoped, since I couldn’t open it immediately and start fiddling with setting it up just the way I like.  It sat in the box for a couple hours by my desk until I took some time before lunch to open it up and start charging it.  Setup was quick and soon I was configuring things to my liking.  I kind of imagined having the packaging and manuals laid out all around me as I sat with it in the middle of the living room (don’t know why).  Instead, it sat next to my work laptop and external monitor and made my desk look like some sort of computing hub.

When I was shopping for laptops, I had wanted one that wouldn’t get hot, but I should have looked for one that wouldn’t be noisy too.  I’m going to have to check with Sony whether this noise level is normal, since it is much louder than I expected a brand new laptop to be.  It certainly wasn’t like this at Best Buy.  It’s not even like I’m making it do all that much work yet either.  We’ll see what they say.

I do enjoy the keyboard more than I thought I would and the backlit feature is nice, though the light peeks through the cracks of the keys and I wish it didn’t do that.  Still, it feels cool that it glows when lighting is low.  The screen is also very nice and I’m glad I didn’t convince myself to get a smaller size.  I have a lot more room to play around with, allowing me to have multiple windows up and in view much easier.  After having an external monitor in addition to my computer monitor at work, I’ve been spoiled and started to get used to having a lot of space to throw up reports and webpages and the like.  This is almost a similar experience.

I had hoped to be a bit more enthusiastic about my new computer, but I’ve been holding myself back from setting everything up until Sony can transfer some of my files and programs.  Once that’s done, I can finally get on with having everything I want on this new device, ready to be tried out.  I can’t wait to take it to the store this weekend (maybe even tomorrow) so I can fully embrace everything it has to offer.  🙂

The hunt for a new laptop

I recently decided that it’s time.   Time to replace my current laptop, which has served me well in the past three years, but has been having difficulty performing up to par more and more.  The battery barely holds a 3-minute charge, the fan whirs loudly within minutes of use, and the whole thing heats up even with proper ventilation.  I’ve wanted to replace this laptop for a year now, but it just didn’t seem justified.  However, I think it’s been long enough that it’s worth replacing now.  Besides, when I stop using a computer, it gets passed on to someone else to make use of for more years to come.  So at least it’s not being wasted.

Yesterday I stopped by my local Best Buy to get a feel for what is out there.  I had thought of a Sony VAIO (which I passed up last time I was looking at computers in favor of an HP Pavilion) or an ASUS.  I wanted to try something new, plus I was told that HPs tend to get hot faster and since that was one of my criteria to select against, it was quickly ruled out.  About a year and a half ago, I found out about an ASUS that incorporated bamboo into its design.  Being that I was quickly becoming a green aficionado, I was intrigued and interested in a more sustainable design.  And so there I was, basically down to two brands, trying to understand the features of each.

Ultimately, I came across the VAIO F model and loved it.  It’s got a beautiful large screen (one of the most important features for me), all the right technical specs, and even a back-lit keyboard for typing in dim lighting!  Initially I had been impressed by the aesthetics and color choices of the EA model, but the screen is small and I’d rather have functionality than have a cool color.  I’ve also heard the Z model can be quite nice, so I’d like to check that one out as well.  I’ve decided against ASUS because the new bamboo model features a dark wood color that doesn’t even resemble bamboo.  I liked their original model with the light color that actually looks like bamboo.  Plus, it seems to be more fancy, so I can always wait until my next upgrade to consider them.

This weekend I’ll try to stop by a Sony Style store so I can explore the computers more in-depth.  It’s really important for me to have a pleasant typing experience, so that’s something I’ll want to try out.  I don’t mind if it’s heavier since I don’t plan on using it outside of my home.  I’ll take a bigger screen and better memory, thank you very much!  I’m excited to go figure out exactly what I want so I can start to hunt down the best deal.  Look for an update when I get my new laptop!  🙂

You can see the little increments on the compass for Safari and read the letters on the Contacts image!

I never really noticed that those globs along the right side of the Contacts image (as seen on an iPhone 3GS) were meant to be letters until I saw the retina display on the iPhone 4.

Square

square logoThis weekend Panda and I went to visit the Chivas goat farm (pictures to come in tomorrow’s post), where we encountered a cool device.  It’s called Square and it’s a credit card scanning device that, combined with a smartphone app, make for a powerful tool for individuals and small businesses.  This simple yet effective little gadget captivated me, so I decided to do some research.  It turns out that not only the software download is free in the app store, but the hardware is also shipped to you for free!  In fact, there is absolutely no cost to set up as long as you have a compatible smartphone, iPad, or iPod touch.

So here I was at the farm, taking a look at their products for sale: soaps, cremes, bath salts, chapstick… all made using goat’s milk rather than water.  I just finished up a facial cream recently, so I was in the market for a new one.  They had a lovely little jar of one, so I opted to get that, along with a clear complexion formulated facial soap for my acne.  I figured since we drove all the way out there to see their goats, try some goat cheese dishes, enjoy the other animals, and get a massage, I might as well get some products to support their fabulous operation.

sample receipt from squareWhen it came time to pay, a gentleman was standing there with an iPad that had a little white square sticking out from the audio jack.  I pulled out my credit card and he swiped it across the plastic square.  On the screen, my card was processed, authorized, and then there was a line for my signature.  Turning the screen to me, he had me sign.  I hesitated for a fraction of a second, wondering if I should look for a pen-like device to sign with, but then went ahead with my finger, since that just seemed the right thing to do.  With my signature captured, the transaction was complete and I was given the option to enter my email or phone number to receive a receipt.  My receipt included not only the items I bought, but a map of where the transaction took place!

square on ipad, iphone, and android phoneHow awesome is that?  Any mobile device that can connect to the internet when you need to do a sale can potentially be used as a platform for Square.  At this point it is available to many Androids and nearly all mobile Apple products.  This really lowers the barrier to entry that individuals and small businesses may have had in the past, where it was not worth it to invest in one of those large credit card swiping machines, pay a monthly fee, and pay a 1-3% transaction fee to the credit card companies.  In fact, this just about eliminates the barrier entirely, since a good portion of people already have or can afford to get one of the devices that Square works with.

I can just imagine an artist or crafts person who had trouble selling things on the fly before because of the cash-only restriction they had, now being able to travel all over the country, accept just about any card that exists, and all for a flat rate of 15 cents plus 2.75% for a card swipe and 3.5% for a manual card entry.  Sure, it might be higher than some cards, but for the convenience, you’d more than likely come out on top since many sales opportunities would have been lost otherwise.  How great would it be to create things wherever you wanted, and be able to sell your items to pretty much anyone you ran into on the street?

And of course people in the service industries can make use of this too, getting paid immediately after walking the dogs for your neighbor or teaching the local kids how to swim.  Business can now be conducted location-independently, and with less foresight.  It’s certainly easier to convince someone to buy something from you or take you up on a service if they don’t need to have cash on them.  Now I wish I had such a business so I could make use of this great product and service!  Too bad I’m not very good with creating things that I can sell.

Computer fail

Well, I had the misfortune of dropping my laptop from about desk height to the (carpeted) ground.  Now I can’t log in to my user profile and it takes me to a generic temporary one each time.  🙁  I’m glad that I can still use the computer, but all the settings I had saved in my account are pretty much inaccessible and I don’t know how to fix it.  I took some time to load all my pictures to my external hard drive in case I can’t log in at all at some point, but I’m really hoping that a day-long break will help my computer right itself.  I’ve restarted and system restored and tried a variety of things to help the situation, but as of yet nothing has helped.  Yet another motivation to get myself a desk to use in my room.  All other surfaces are just too unstable!  Maybe I’ll end up replacing this computer for my birthday then… I have been meaning to get a new one, but never had much of a reason to.

The trap of logins

There are so many sites that require signing up for an account and creating a login that I have a spreadsheet just to keep track of them all.  It kind of sucks to get stuck in this trap of login after login, especially when you’re not on your personal computer and can’t always remember the usernames and passwords you use.  It’s hard to create a standard set to use too, since each site has different requirements on length and complexity of the username and/or password.  Plus, if you always use the same one, if someone hacks into one, that could compromise all your accounts.  It’s a bit of a lose-lose situation.

I’ve also found that people are very averse to creating accounts, which is why it often comes with an enticing prize, like a chance to win a cool gadget.  I suppose the nice thing is that many tap into Facebook, so you can sign in using that account, but then comes the issue of compromised privacy.  Now the company knows your Facebook account and can find out more information about you, since you have to agree to share some of your personal information with them to connect using Facebook.  It’s a battle of convenience vs. privacy.

It can get overwhelming because SO MANY sites want you to sign up with them and unfortunately, it’s often unavoidable if you want their service.  Can’t they just use that fingerprint scanner some computers have and send the scan to the site so I can be let in without typing out all possible passwords I use?  In the future, I expect someone to invent a faster way for our identity to be confirmed and access to be granted to these sites (in a quick, painless, electronic way).  For now, I guess we’ll all just have to put up with creating a slew of usernames and passwords.

iphone with cracked glassMy phone slipped yesterday, landing on the cement floor at work.  I’d never had a problem before, but this time I picked it up to find the glass had cracked.  Dismayed, I immediately began to research whether or not that was covered in my warranty, and eventually found and article that gave me hope.  It talked about how Geniuses are now allowed to replace the screen in store, so there was hope of getting it done for free!  This was confirmed in a CNET article:

We’ve received reports from some readers who had success having their iPhones with cracked screens replaced free of charge by geniuses at the Apple Store, but don’t count on it.

I immediately booked an appointment at the closest Apple Store for after work.  The guy who helped me told me it would normally cost $199 AND it would void my warranty to get it replaced.  But lucky me, he was in a good mood and we had a good rapport going, so he decided to replace it for me for free.  🙂  It was a quick fix in the back, taking about 10 minutes.  I signed some paperwork and was out the door, brand new screen in tow.  Now I’m super paranoid about dropping it and I admire the smoothness of the glass all the more.

It’s a good thing I was able to get it fixed so easily (and for free)!  Otherwise, I would have spent much of my time running my finger along the cracks, which would have inevitably given me a cut eventually.  The top part where the cracking started is actually higher than the part with the cracks.  If it weren’t for that, I’d be ok with not fixing it, but it had become a bit of a hazard for someone like me who likes to fiddle with things.  I was lucky the cracking was in a rather unobtrusive place to begin with, and even luckier to have gotten the whole thing replaced!

Why computers should be cleaned

If you’ve had your laptop or desktop for a few years and the fan is having trouble cooling the device like it used to, it’s more than likely you are the victim of a massive dust bunny.  It’s a fun adventure to take apart your computer to clean it out and help lengthen its life.  After all, you don’t want it overheating and oftentimes, that can be caused by these dust bunnies!
