Police “chase”

On the drive home on the 405 and suddenly there are flashing red lights glowing around me.  A glance to the left found a police car advancing to pull a car over.   I slowed to let him pass and wondered if I was allowed to drive past him once he got the car to the far right lane and was just waiting for it to pull over.  Unsure, I just drove slowly until he exited.

I’ve definitely noticed a lot more police action lately!   In fact, earlier this week I was at McDonald’s for lunch and saw two cops on motorcycles pull over a car, then saw two cop cars in the parking lot, and as I was leaving, another one on a motorcycle had pulled over a car.   They must be short on money and really looking to fine people!

Sickness

It’s the time again, when people’s sinuses get the best of them and somehow spring brings with it no shortage of colds.  I got sick last week and coughed my way through many days before the temperature of the office was thankfully brought up to less than freezing.  Interestingly, the guy sitting next to me was out sick the second day I was ill, then when he returned the following day, the guy next to him was out!  Must have been passed on between us.  😛  One of the guys at a company we work with told me he got sick and was out yesterday too.  Yeesh, the bug is getting around.  Have you gotten it?

Now this week I’m not sick, but my nasal cavity is still not at its best.  This morning I lost my voice a bit and this week Panda has been borderline sick as well.  I joked that since I probably gave it to him, I’m not going to get it back from him – no tag-backs, right?  So I’m not afraid of getting sick again, but I do need my throat to cooperate before I’ll be back to normal again.  It sucks when you sound like you’ve just woken up throughout the entire work day.  I’ve been drinking warm water and wearing two jackets all week, but obviously that hasn’t worked as quickly or effectively as I had hoped.

So all you healthy people out there, beware!  Eat some extra fruit, drink some extra water, and stay warm.  Before we know it, this will all be over and summer will be in full swing.  I can’t wait!

Bird observing traffic signals

Stop...

...and go!

Haha, I was amused that the bird was following the signal, staying still with the red light and moving with the green. 😛

Avatar algorithm

I am greatly amused by how fitting the avatars generated for my commentators tend to be.  The girls get “prettier” ones and the guys get more bold ones (not to gender stereotype, but personality-wise these people tend to fit those profiles).  If you want to see what yours is, just comment on my blog and the little square picture that shows up is your avatar.  If you see a picture, that means you created a Gravatar, so you’d either have to comment using an email different from your Gravatar, or go deactivate your picture for a bit to see what would have been generated for you.

I don’t know what type of algorithm is used to translate an email address into an avatar and it’s probably completely random, but I do feel that you’ll like get an image that you like and/or seems fitting for you.  Perhaps it’s all my imagination, but I can’t help but think that!  If you don’t believe me, try it for yourself and see what you think!  The style I chose is called “Identicon” and all images are single-colored geometric patterns.  There’s also a set called “Wavatar” and another called “MonsterID” – the former I’m not very familiar with and seems to be little geometric creatures, while the latter is a bunch of fun little monster cartoons.

Go ahead, give it a try and let me know if you like what you get!  🙂

Los Angeles foot traffic

people crowding crosswalk in PasadenaPeople always talk about LA’s traffic problems, but you know where we don’t have a problem?  Foot traffic.  In fact, I’m surprised I didn’t notice the notable lack of people walking around the streets.  Now I understand why Westwood always felt so much homier and festive – because there are always students walking around!  So imagine my surprise when I stopped at a crosswalk to find this many people criss-crossing!  It’s probably one of the few places in LA where you’ll find so many people that you can’t even see the other side of the road.

Dedication

I never really paid attention much, but it seems that my dedication is unusually strong.

One thing I’ve noticed lately is that a lot of blogs fall to the wayside, with people starting off hopeful and then posts end up dwindling to nothing.  The same thing goes for journals.  For years I’ve been hearing from friends and others I meet that they tried to keep one too, but it never really got anywhere.  Meanwhile, I kept daily journal for 13 years, accumulating around 50 volumes of journals before I stopped (I blame meeting Panda :-P).  I’ve still got notes for my journal from when I left off and I’ve been considering picking it up again.  However, there’s always the battle of “is it worth the time?” or “does this matter enough to me to be recorded?”  After all, the time I spend writing is time I’m not spending doing other fun and interesting things worth writing about.

What is it about writing blogs or journals that makes nearly everyone want to do it at some point?  I guess there’s a certain human quality that craves documentation and future historical value.  There are memories that we’d like to have to look back on.  On the other hand, it could really be a more technical issue, with those who want to practice their writing and develop it over the years.  Certainly lack of consistent writing will have a detrimental effect on the quality of your pieces, especially years down the road.  So professional or not, a blog or journal can at least force you to keep up your writing skills, to some degree.

I’ve also wondered what it is about me that makes me continue writing when others would have stopped.  Why do so many people want to write regularly, but don’t?  Perhaps it is because I am stubborn.  Perhaps it is because I got started at a young age (10).  Perhaps it is because my sentimentalism drives me to keep on going so I’ll have a lot to look back on.  I’m not quite sure what it is exactly, but many factors have urged me on over the years, as I continuously questioned the value of writing so much.  I’ve spent countless hours huddled with the latest journal design I was using, accompanied by a lovely stash of colored pens that I wrote with.  Now I’m spending countless hours typing away my thoughts, exploring some of the things that have been on my mind.  It certainly is a great outlet, preserved for all posterity.

Ultimately, I guess it just comes down to that fact that I want to keep going.  Whatever the reasons for wanting may have changed over the years as my style and even medium of writing transitioned, but that desire has not faded.  And so, I will keep on writing and wondering what this is all about, if only because I am dedicated to this part of my life.

Sleep & waking up

I have trouble falling asleep before 1 or 2 AM and usually don’t get to bed until past 2.  This doesn’t bode well for getting up in the morning, which is always a painful experience.  Yet, no amount of suffering in the morning seems to motivate me to get to bed earlier.  It’s difficult to go to sleep right when your body is reaching its peak energy levels.  It’s also difficult when your mind is reaching its peak activity levels.  I always want to do more at night and can stay more focused too.

I wonder how long it’s going to take before I can sleep at midnight again.  Perhaps never?  After all, I seem to be doing alright with 6-6.5 hours a night, then sleeping in on the weekends.  I love sleeping in more than most things and I’d definitely want to try an alternate work day in the future, getting up around noon and working until the late night.  It might not be healthy by normal standards, but I believe my body is telling me something about my personal internal clock that supersedes conventional norms.

This week has gone by at a decent pace and I’m glad that tomorrow is Friday!  That means that I won’t have to worry about how late I sleep, since I can just sleep in the next day.  🙂  It’s a satisfaction that few things in life can bring me.  Simple, yet so pleasurable.  Plus I’ve got an AMAZING body pillow that encourages me to stay in bed all day long.  When I first got it, I couldn’t climb out of bed for a week.  As I got more used to it, I can manage to let it go better, but it’s a great sleep aid.  If only Costco still sold that texture!  The ones they have now are nowhere as comfortable as the original ones they sold two years ago.  Pity, for I definitely would have gotten more.

Earthquake tunnel

approaching the "earthquake tunnel," where the 405 meets the 5

Not a high-traffic day, so there wasn't any honking, but here's the unassuming tunnel.

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard, but in Los Angeles, there is an “earthquake tunnel” that locals like to use as a good luck charm against earthquakes.  It’s a tradition that I learned of soon after arriving here and I have no recollection of how I heard of it or who told me, but I observe all the time when I am there.  What am I talking about?  Well, where the 405 North ends and merges into the 5 freeway, there is a tunnel that people drive under.  When you are under it during rush hour (or any other time traffic is slow), you will find a good third of the cars will honk their horns incessantly until they are out.

driving through the "earthquake tunnel" at night

I usually am under this thing at night. It's great when big rigs join in the honking too.

It’s one of those fun, somewhat underground (haha no pun intended) traditions that is still alive and well.  I guess it’s a superstitious act, since honking your horn is supposed to prevent earthquakes from hitting us too hard.  It seems to be working, since that big one is way overdue and still not coming…  Anyway, whenever I’m stuck in that tunnel during traffic hours, there’s always a car or two honking its way through.  I’ve only joined in once, but it puts a small smile to my face as those people enjoy their freedom to honk as they please.  After all, I realized not long ago that I don’t even know what my car horn sounds like.  I don’t exactly have a situation where I can test it without drawing attention.
