Bruins vs. Trojans

Ah yes, it’s that time of year again.  When our cross-town rivalry reaches its peak right before and during the UCLA-USC game.  This year, the students were back at it again, pulling pranks on each others’ campuses.  First ‘SC struck early in the week with a prank from years past: dying our fountain water red.  Then UCLA retaliated with some redecorating of ‘SC’s field and gave them nice blue and gold UCLA lettering.  The student bodies have tied 1-1, so now it’s up to the football teams to straighten out the score with their game tomorrow!

In the mean time, I attended an alumni mixer tonight uniting us rivals with a UCLA-USC gathering.  I met a lot of people in a lot of industries from all over LA (and from both campuses).  I even ran into a few familiar faces and exchanged business cards with others.  All in all a productive night – in fact it went by so quickly I didn’t even realize it was nearly 11 when I left!  No wonder my back was starting to ache; I’d been standing for three and a half hours!  It was a great way to kick off the weekend and now I just need to find a place to watch the game since I have no TV…

Alumni mentor

Tonight I met my mentees for the UCLA Alumni Mentor program!  It was really fun and I’m looking forward to building strong relationships with them.  As far as I know, we’re on our own now that we’ve been matched up, so I’m going to come up with some fun things we can do together over the course of this year.  I’m really looking forward to learning about these two that I have been matched with.  One is a first year just embarking on the college experience and one is a fourth year, getting ready to transition out.  I hope that I have some useful insight to offer them both!

I remember back when I was a fourth year, just returning from a year abroad in England.  I had opted to live on campus again and many of the friends I made in the rooms around me were first years.  I think it was then that I started to really have some mentoring kind of role.  I had amassed a lot of knowledge in those years of undergrad living and had so much to share about not just the UCLA campus, but college life in general.  It’s crazy to think that they are now fourth years.  In my mind, they’re still first years, full of energy and inexperience.  But alas, they have grown so much and learned a lot over these years.  It’s pretty cool.

I hope that I prove to be a good mentor, even if I am still pretty fresh out of college.  Last year I opted not to participate because I felt I didn’t have enough to offer – no real world experience, no full-time job, or any of that “grownup” stuff.  This time around I was eager because I’ve been working for many months now and I’ve had some really great experiences since I left college.  Between that and all the internships and jobs and student organizations I have under my belt, I feel like I can contribute something useful now.  It’ll be a learning process for me and them, and I’m glad to have this to look forward to and plan for.  🙂

Westwood parking

Bruins understand that Westwood is a crazy place to try to find street parking at, but this summer, it got out of control with construction and special groups arriving. Did they really need FIVE signs here?!?!

Ok, seriously? Isn't this a bit overkill? Might as well just put one sign that says NO PARKING except 6-8 PM Sunday.

Today marks the first day of the first full week of class at UCLA after Panda graduated. So, here’s a look back on a couple of months ago, when he was conferred his Bachelor’s degree.

The candidates file in to the Los Angeles Tennis Center (LATC) to begin the ceremony.

two recycle bins, one compost, and one trash

I love that there are two recycle bins, but I think the ratio should be more like 2 compost, 1 recycle, and a half-size one for trash.

Gosh, it’s been over a month since John Wooden passed away. I wish I had gotten a chance to shake his hand…

During graduation weekend, people came by and left bouquets and leis in memory of John Wooden.

John Wooden was an alum of Beta Theta Pi, so they hung up a sign for him.

Yesterday I actually meant to post a video, but Vimeo was doing maintenance and I couldn’t upload the videos of this little mouse, mousing around. So here you go, an encore presentation:

Critter: cute or creepy?

I love wildlife of all kinds, so it thought this field mouse-looking critter was quite cute, but I must admit that tail isn’t a very pretty sight… maybe it’s a deer mouse?

He walks/runs with this awkward sort of gait, bouncing off the tips of his toes.

This positioning looks very much like the toy mice I would buy my cats...

He was less than a foot from my feet and I was squatting, so I could have reached out to touch him!
